The territory of Caltagirone, thanks to its abundance of water, was seat to major manufacturers since the Neolithic and gradually assumed a central role in the Sicilian geopolitical framework.

After the 1693 earthquake, which destroyed the city, it rose again with the rich Baroque architecture which characterizes the entire Val di Noto, but by developing in particular the issues of its ceramic tradition in artistic and figurative direction, to make these elements as distinguishing marks of an universally recognized center of excellence.

Reconstructive thrust resulted in the evolution of artisans, embellishing the quality of their manufactured goods up to reaching the heights.

The figuration of classic Greek derivation, with the characteristic theme of the acanthus leaf, is enriched with the exuberance of the natural color of flowers and fruit compositions, which sinuously intertwined with the geometries inspired to Islamic tiles, making the "calatina" production so unic and unmistakable.

Today Caltagirone is a real open air museum, able to combine ancient, modern and contemporary art, thanks to the creativity of young artists who reinterpret tradition.
